Tasks and responsibilities:
- Assist with the provision of personal care including washing, dressing, toileting, feeding, ambulation etc. to the elderly residents. This job will help prepare students to pursue further education in the nursing field, Personal Support Worker, social work, gerontology and dealing with the elderly.
- Support residents in social events of their choice.
- Ensure that that the proper procedures for Valley Manor programs are followed and performed. i.e. fire regulations, infection control, WHMIS, lifts and transfers, hazards, Step Ahead, GPA, etc.
- Adhere to all safety requirements for staff, residents, volunteers, visitors etc. Attend in-service training and educations sessions and booklet training. Follow all guidelines of the Nursing department and Valley Manor.
Description of supervision:
The summer student would assist and be supervised by a team of PSW’s. The team lead on each unit is an RPN who oversees all workers. The RN in charge supervises all units. They would also be monitored through spot checks by the Nursing Care Coordinator. If further supervision is required, it is escalated to the Director of Care.
Eligible participants must be:
between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
