DIRECTOR OF CARE

Due to an upcoming retirement, Valley Manor Long Term Care is currently recruiting for a Full-Time Director of Care to join their progressive and dynamic team

The Director of Care (DOC) is accountable to the CEO and the Board of Directors for the overall management of the nursing department and resident care services, while following the strategic plan and operational directions.  Through effective management of all resources in the nursing envelope and development of a strong nursing team, the DOC will ensure the delivery of optimal resident-focused care and service, based on legislative requirements and Valley Manor policies and procedures. This also includes provision of care to residents consistent with the professional standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.  Ensures that employees perform work in accordance with Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021 and supporting regulations 246/22.  The DOC is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the core values and employee guiding principles, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence. The DOC will also have the opportunity to foster a culture of excellence, promote collaboration among staff, and provide exceptional leadership to enhance resident care, whereby the opportunity for professional growth is enhanced through participation in community partnerships and committees which contributes to the healthcare community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

While respecting the mission, vision and values of the Home, the DOC will:

Manage all aspects of nursing care at Valley Manor to ensure quality resident care through the effective and efficient delivery of established standards within legislative and budgetary requirements.

Interprets nursing philosophy and establishes and implements goals and objectives, policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements, FLTCA 2021
Maintains all required records, reports, statistics, etc., for both residents and department personnel in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
Liaises and consults with families/residents, government officials, community health care partners, company resources and professionals in relation to resident care needs and department activities.
Provide advice and guidance related to clinical practices, procedures and compliance.
Actively participates within the Ottawa Valley Ontario Health Team
Actively participates and leads the Accreditation process in collaboration with the leadership team.
Participates in investigations as necessary with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour other internal investigations
Keen ability to perform Root Cause Analysis studies
Builds strong relationships with the home leadership and provides mentorship and coaching to nursing supervisors and front-line staff.
Leads the development of the annual nursing budget;
Oversees nursing processes to ensure that all documentation is completed in a manner that maximizes base funding and ensures access to other available funding initiatives
Models and fosters an environment of positive customer service in all aspects of care;
Has experience working in a unionized environment and fosters excellent relationships
Has knowledge of ethics and ethical frameworks
Contributes to the development and creation of a safe work culture, leading by example in all aspects of health and safety;
Has knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act
Ensures the implementation of a complete quality and risk management program for the nursing department via the Continuous Quality Improvement committee as per the FLTCA 2021

QUALIFICATIONS:

Registered Nurse required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an asset
Certification with CNA in Gerontology and Palliative Care is an asset
Membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Must possess sound clinical skills and knowledge of gerontological nursing practice
Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a registered nurse in the long-term care sector required;
Minimum of 5 years of working experience as a registered nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting required.
Knowledge of applicable legislation, unionized settings and labour contracts preferred
Must have an extensive knowledge of MOLTC FLTCA2021 Act & regulations.
Independent self-starter who proactively seeks information from various sources • Proven coaching and mentoring skills and enabler of learning
Superb organization, planning, time management and multi-tasking skills
Knowledgeable in the application of Infection Prevention & Control Measures in a health care facility
Ability and willingness to work with minimum supervision in a high pressure, team environment that requires initiative, confidentiality, and demonstrates ability to work efficiently with all levels of personnel and healthcare partners
Must have a proven track record of excellent and committed workplace attendance.
Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, ECPS ordering systems, Point Click Care, Staff Schedule Care, Word and Outlook

This position requires 45 hours per month of dietitian support based on the Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations.

Education & Experience

  • Member in good standing of the College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • Must have liability insurance, TB testing and vulnerable sector police check
  • Membership in Dietitians of Canada – Gerontology Network an asset
  • An active member of CSNM is considered an asset

  • Develop, evaluate and modify nutritional care plans for all Residents; liaise with Residents, family members and/or substitute decision makers and the interdisciplinary team when implementing dietary interventions.
  • Conduct swallowing assessments, as needed.
  • Provide nutrition counselling and education to Residents and family members and/or substitute decision makers, as needed, in line with supporting Residents’ nutrition care.
  • Collaborate with the Food and Nutrition Manager to implement a pleasurable dining experience for Residents.
  • Participate in Care Conferences and committee meetings as needed.
  • Review and approve seasonal menus; develop individualized menus for Residents, as needed.
  • Provide education and training to dietary and nursing staff to support home-specific policies and procedures, as needed.
  • Participate in home-specific continuous quality improvement initiatives, as needed.

Participate in creating an organizational environment that supports safety and quality of resident care and life, collaborative practice, and professional growth.
Participate in Quality Committee meetings; support CQI projects and initiatives.
Participate in providing after hours and on-call coverage
