Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Assist the Activities Director and staff in providing activities to all residents on a group or individual basis.
  • Assist and set up rooms for programs, games and events.
  • Promote and encourage all residents to take part in events either passively or actively.
  • Physically assist residents to get to and from programs safely and return them to their area afterwards.
  • Assist in the resident dining process by serving meals, feeding and assisting residents in the dining room. Apply, learn and utilize a variety of communication techniques and skills in dealing with the elderly.
  • Ensure that the proper procedures for Valley Manor programs are followed and performed. i.e. fire regulations, infection control, WHMIS, lifts and transfers, hazards, Step Ahead, GPA, etc.
  •  This job will help prepare students to pursue further education in Recreation & Leisure Services, Therapeutic Recreation, gerontology and other health related fields.
  • Adhere to all safety requirements for staff, residents, volunteers, visitors etc. Attend in-service training and educations sessions and booklet training. Follow all guidelines of the Activities department and Valley Manor.

Description of supervision:

The student will be supervised by a team of Activity Aides. The Activities Director will oversee and ensure the proper supervision is taking place. Training sessions will be provided by the Activities Aides for tasks performed in the department.

Eligible participants must be:

between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and

have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
